Clinical decision-support for IOL selection in cataract surgery
Eutelos partnered with Protocoding to build EyeDecide, a full-stack clinical decision-support platform that transforms how ophthalmologists counsel patients on intraocular lens (IOL) selection during cataract surgery. The platform replaces subjective, inconsistent consultations with a data-driven, configurable scoring system — helping surgeons recommend the right lens while improving patient understanding and confidence.

01
Cataract surgeons face a growing landscape of 16+ premium IOL options, each with distinct tradeoffs across distance, intermediate, and near vision. Counseling is often inconsistent across doctors and offices, patients struggle to understand their options, and practices lack a standardized way to match lifestyle needs to the best-fit lens. The result: underutilized premium lenses, misaligned expectations, and lost revenue.
02
A multi-tenant, role-based platform spanning the full patient journey — from lifestyle survey intake to scored lens recommendations, educational content, and exportable clinical reports. Core capabilities include a configurable drag-and-drop survey engine with hierarchical inheritance across practice levels, an intelligent scoring matrix that maps every patient answer against all 16 lens types simultaneously, anonymous patient surveys with zero PII storage, role-based access control with database-level data isolation, a lockdown mode for in-office tablet workflows, professional PDF export in three modes (patient-facing, physician-facing, and full clinical), prescription management with per-eye overlay on survey results, full practice management with auto-provisioned templates and lens catalogs, and a progressive web app installable on tablets with offline support.
03
We built a hierarchical configuration system that lets each level of a practice — from organization defaults to individual doctors — customize survey templates and scoring without duplicating data. Authorization is enforced at the database layer rather than in application code, ensuring tenant isolation by design. The platform uses anonymous survey identifiers generated on the client, so no patient-identifying information ever touches the server. The entire codebase is strictly typed and tested in CI.
04
EyeDecide gives ophthalmology practices a turnkey platform to standardize IOL counseling, increase premium lens adoption, and deliver a modern, data-driven patient experience — all running on a tablet in the exam room. The system scores 16 IOL lens types simultaneously per survey, supports multi-level template inheritance, and generates tailored PDF reports for every audience — giving surgeons the flexibility they need at every stage of the decision process.
“Protocoding took a complex clinical workflow and turned it into an intuitive platform our surgeons actually want to use. The speed of delivery and depth of engineering exceeded our expectations at every milestone.”
